About JASON

I’m a resourceful user experience leader with 17 years of design and technology experience helping launch multiple startups as a founding-team member as well as scaling teams & processes post acquisition. My capabilities include individual contributor and leadership roles utilizing multiple UX & UI design skills.

How I work...
Any UX professional can almost always walk in and do something without first asking questions. But being presumptuous about a business, its market or its users inevitably fails. I first start by wanting to hear what a business’ leadership is saying. What are their priorities? What keeps them awake at night? And only after, will I begin talking about which of my services or those of others could help them. Those same listening techniques used with leadership – and other parts of the org – to discover and validate their problems, tasks, and goals will also be utilized with users to discover their problems, tasks, and goals...and then ultimately set a user experience strategy.

How I recharge...
I was born & raised on the coast. So you can usually find me in the nearest body of water – preferably one with waves. I may be landlocked deep in the heart of Texas, but surfing is still my first love. Other interests include time with my family, paddle-boarding, travel, strength-training, sketching, and exploring Austin.

SKILLS

I have well practiced capabilities, but I stop short of calling myself an expert. Frankly, in the field of user experience not many could or should be considered experts. Its pace of evolution is relentless. Everyday contains a new challenge, a new lesson.

Power of language Award

A video montage about my work that was shown when I was honored with a surprise Power of Language award in front the entire Advisory Board company on Friday, October 28, 2011 at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium.

Jason took our complicated, sophisticated, and profound message and broadcast it clear and loud and large to a vast receptive audience of physicians and physician leaders, enabling real-world gains in patient care and health care efficiency...

I think that the success of Crimson today was built on the foundation of the Crimson Continuum of Care application which was built I think for all intents and purposes, in terms of user experience, by Jason.
— David Chao, Ph.D., CTO of Advisory Board

"Jason is the embodiment of a great design sense and a tenacious work ethic. As our founding UI/UX designer at Crimson, he elevated our design esthetic and standardized our flagship product’s look and feel. And Jason never stopped until he got it right. Through a continuous improvement process, he ensured the usability of a highly complex and data-rich application, an application that eventually became the standard for physician performance profiling." - William Chan, Co-founder and VP Products, Crimson

"Jason’s key and utterly critical contribution to our work building Crimson and then growing it into the powerhouse division of the Advisory Board Company was his phenomenal, almost magical ability to facilitate the construction of great ideas. By that I mean Jason was always at the center, always encouraging, actively listening in a non-judgemental way and somehow brought back the raw ideas you would throw at him in a way that always made them seem like amazing inspiration. He would wade into the chaos and encourage discussion and creativity in a way that allowed all the participants to eventually see the form emerge from the randomness.
Almost like the world’s best police station sketch artist - he would synthesize and help catch vague thoughts before they would disappear - and give us a chance to really consider what we could make from them.
Doesn’t make a difference if you are a start-up or a huge corporation - if you need help for your teams to really see what they are only dimly imagining, if you want to fully leverage the art of the possible - Jason’s the guy you need". - David Chao, Ph.D., CTO of Advisory Board

"Jason is hands down the best UX person that I have ever worked with. On top of excellent instincts for design he has the ability to understand the larger aims of the business and make sure that the experience is focused around making the product both easy to use and easy for customers to achieve value from it. Any software organization would be lucky to have Jason." - Ben Gawiser, VP Services, Advisory Board

"I saw Jason build an incredible UX team from the ground up, it was a group I was incredibly proud to be a part of. The senior talent he was able to recruit was top notch and he wasn’t afraid to take chances on junior talent who showed passion and promise. His forward-thinking vision was directly responsible for me being able to successfully transition into the UX field, I owe a lot of my career trajectory to him." - Larisa Chavarría, Senior UX Designer, Advisory Board
